The History And Traits Of Marx Toy Trains

Saturday, March 13th, 2010

At the end of World War I, in 1919, Luis Marx started out a toy company. The company was called Marx and Company and was co-founded by Louis brother, David Marx. The company’s motto was to, “give the customer further toy for less dollars.” The company enjoyed a long run of success, surviving the both the Excellent Depression and the second World War, before it closed its doors in 1978, six years after Louis Marx sold the company to Quaker Oats. Through the Fantastic Depression the Marx Company had over $500,000 in debt, a debt that was extra then covered by its $3.2 million in assets.

In addition to several international plants, Marx had three plants within the United States, two in Pennsylvania, and one in West Virginia. One of the places that they sold their toys was inside the Sears Roebucks magazine.

Some people feel that throughout its heyday, Marx and Company actually sold extra toy trains then any of the other toy companies. The first train they sold was the Joy Line, which they sold on commission for the Girard Company. Shortly after his company started selling the Joy Line, Louis Marx arranged for the Girard Company to design a toy train specifically for Marx and Company. Eventually the Girard Company was purchased by Marx.

In the marketplace, Marx trains were noticeable since they were usually smaller and cheaper then the ones made by the Lionel Company and American Flyer. The Marx Company designed electric toy trains that showcased an open frame motor, this motor qualities a gear that is fixed to one end of the axle of the armature. The company seldom varied from this design. Post World War II, Marx and Company started to make trains out of plastic. Extra expensive versions of Marx toy trains included a smoker that heated smoke fluid to produce smoke.

Marx trains usually have a copper shoe pickup. On a Marx motor, the center rail pickup, is ordinarily made out of copper strip.

Until the late 1950’s Marx made their toy trains with a fat wheel. This fat wheel makes it practically impossible for Marx toy trains to negotiate the switches and crossovers of Lionel tracks.

Older models of Marx trains feature open switches. Marx and Company designed their switches so that the wiring was similar to the wiring in two rail switches. Three wires, red, green, and black, go directly to the the switch.

Most of Marx scale freighters showcased a a low truck with small wheels. Marx used a dovetail design for their tilt couplers. Marx tilt couplers are incompatible with Lionel couplers. The tilt couplers were one single molded piece. In later years, Marx made one piece knuckle couplers that have to be coupled by hand.

Most of the original Marx and Company motors have a metal frame and metal gears. A few of their later on styles have frames and gears that are made out of plastic. A few of the cheaper toy trains that Marx designed can’t reverse, they can only go forward.

Collectibles – Why People Collect Things

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

Since childhood, most people must have had collectibles that they wanted to collect. People usually collect meaningful stuff or those that hold their interest for a long while. These include, but are not limited to: bottle caps, stamps, leaves, rocks, shells, action figures, figurines, plastic models, t-shirts, key chains, and even stuff worth over a hundred bucks. Collectibles can be anything, really, as long as the person who collects them believe they are worth collecting.

So why do people collect stuff?

Satisfaction – We have to admit, some people simply love collecting things. Adding another piece to a collection gives the right amount of satisfaction for any collector. And even more so when the collection is completed.

Interest – Some collectibles are specifically tailored for people who hold interest in them. Some examples include plastic models for mecha (giant robot) fans or figurines for those who like cute stuff such as Precious Moments figurines. Some people’s collections would include those that are currently in style or fashionable for that period of time. The problem with those types of collections is that when the fad is gone, interest in collecting them also wanes.

Fun – Collecting collectibles can be fun so many people do it as a hobby. It is especially nice to see one’s collection growing and like what people would say in a party, the more the merrier.

Trading – Some people collect rare or limited pieces of certain collectibles for trading with other people and gaining a profit out of doing so. Alternatively, there are those who collect things that they know they can use to trade for stuff that can be added to their own collection.

Selling – You will often find people selling completed sets of collectibles online for a really high price. Several pieces can also be found being sold for a price especially the limited or rare ones. People who sell pieces or whole sets can either be collectors who are just after the satisfaction of completing them and want to make a profit, or are simply in it just to make money.

There are many other reasons why people collect stuff but these are some of the most common. Have you ever had your own collection? If you have, what was the reason you did?

Take Care When Cleaning Antique Rhinestone Jewelry

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

A typical trouble with vintage rhinestone jewellery is that the stones may have began to look a little yellowy. This is simply not the rock crystal aging but is generally the glue that bonds the crystal onto the backing that’s getting older and getting hard.

The stone may suffer a loss of its sparkle due to oxidation after exposure to sunlight, air and pollution for a period of time however in most cases the cleaning process is simple and cheap and you are able to do the clean-up yourself at home.

You will find many various ideas on the best way to clean vintage rhinestone jewellery, however, the foil backing on the crystal is the issue that will cause the most problems.

The best method to clean retro rhinestone bracelets is always to spray it with compressed air to release up the dirt then wipe it down using a soft, lint-free rag and use a cotton bud dipped in surgical spirit to clean up the tiny crevices.

Many people merely use soap and water and brush the stone using a toothbrush to clean it however by doing this, you chance getting the metal foil damp which could turn the color black.

Once you have done the cleaning process, wipe the rhinestone dry using a fresh dry cloth or use a hair dryer on low heat or even cool air setting in order to accelerate the drying process.

If you see that the stone has started to be yellowish at the bottom, it may be due to the oxidation of the epoxy holding the stone and the metal foil.  In which case, the problem is below the stone and it is probably not possible for you to clean it without removing the stone.

If this occurs, so that you don’t chance additional damage, you may have to send the rhinestone jewellery to an expert for cleaning.

Making Scented Candles – 4 Tips for Creating Aromatic Wax Beauty

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

Aromatic candles will enhance the ambience of a room. If you are a romantic kind of person, you’ll appreciate the aroma of these scented wax masterpieces. Treat your guests to a touch of mystique and a sense of calm. And, of course, the glow of almost any candle highlights the elegance of the room.

The warm fragrance of a scented candle will lift your spirts, even when the candle is not lit. So when you come home tired and frazzled, the aroma & flickering glow of a scented wax candle will relieve your tightness & lift your spirits.

Scented candles are wonderful gifts for any occasion and/or season, especially when made by your own hands.

1. Select Your {Candle Fragrance}

Fragrance oil is available in virtually any craft shop. Also, you may buy it online. I would suggest that you opt for fragrance oils rather than going for cheap water or alcohol based fragrances. Because your wax mix is oil based, your fragrance must also be oil based. Why? Oil and water do not mix so a water based perfume will not mix properly with the oil based wax.

2. Choose Your Wax

The basics of {making a scented candle} are more or less the same as for ordinary wax candles. Start by choosing your desired kind of wax. Available in the market is a versatile range of wax starting with the naturals, beeswax, palm & soy, and progressing to paraffin or gel wax. It is important that you decide on the fragrance intensity for your candles before picking the kind of wax. For instance, wax with less density holds less fragrance than higher density wax.

3. The Process of Making Scented Candles

Now we’ll go through the process of creating aromatic candles.

The first step is to melt your wax. I recommend using a double boiler. That means put the wax in a small pot. Now place that container into a slightly larger pot partially filled with water. Next step – heat the water. Use a thermometer so as not to burn the wax. Maintain the temperature at a constant 170-180 degrees F.

After the wax is melted, insert a wick into the mold and remove your wax from it’s source of heat. Now add the fragrance oil that you have chosen. One ounce fragrance oil to 1 pound wax will create a 6% fragrance. Be aware that greater amounts of fragrance will cause the candle to burn out sooner because it has a higher liquid density.

Now pour the melted wax/fragrance mixture into your mold. The only task left is to let it the mold cool before removing your candle.

Congratulations, well done!

4. Experiment as You Move Along

You will gain great expertise in all phases of candle making once you start experimenting. By using different fragrances and colors, you will perfect the candle making technique and thoroughly enjoy the process.

It’s a great feeling to award your loved ones with a {homemade scented candle} knowing that they will find the fragrant essences both relaxing and invigorating.
